This time of year we are excited about the new year, New Year’s Day and what the future holds. Perhaps this past year has had some difficulties and hard times. We just want to move on to a new year that promises good things.

I think we all tend to think this way. But, we may be making a mistake. Even though last year had its difficulties, it is important to take note of the good things that came our way. God allows difficulties in His infinite wisdom, but He also brings many blessings. There is an old-time hymn that says, “Count your blessings, name them one by one”. All of my blessings are subsumed under the one great blessing of knowing and belonging to Jesus Christ for all eternity. They all come to me through Him. Here are some of my blessings for this past year.

At the top of the list is my wife, Carol. She is a daily blessing to me in love, faithfulness and just plain friendship. The Lord has blessed me richly in giving her to me, and me to her. Life would be so much more difficult without her. I am truly blessed.

Next would be my grandkids. It is such a pleasure to be able to interact with them in their lives as adults. I pray for them daily. They all have their personalities, interests, and life directions. It is just a blessing to be included in their lives and to possibly be some kind of good influence.

I would be remiss if I did not mention my daughter Brittany and her husband Gary. We are like-minded in many ways, and it is a blessing to be able to interact with them and depend on them.

Then, there is my health. Even though I am approaching 80 years old, my health is still pretty good. I am grateful to God for this blessing. Yes, there are some issues, but nothing life-threatening. I hope the Lord will allow me to make it to “four score”, that is quite a milestone.

We have found a good church. In an environment of what I call ‘flaky, woke christianity’ today, Carol and I go to a small church near our home that is solid. Lots of good christian folks. It is a real blessing to be a part of this fellowship.

There are many other lesser blessings, too many to count. Even though we all go through difficulties at times, it is important to “count your blessings”, and thank God for them.
