I have a concealed carry permit for a firearm from our local Sheriff. I have to renew it every 5 years. The old policy was if you were a law enforcement officer, and you gave them a letter from your old department, you were issued a permit. That changed this year.

The new policy is if you are from an out-of-state agency, you have to take a permit renewal course. I took that course yesterday. They covered many legal issues about Colorado law regarding concealed carry and shooting scenarios. At first, I was annoyed I had to do this, but it was worthwhile. It was a good course.

One thing I did not expect was doing a qualification shoot with my concealed carry gun. I did not bring ear protectors to the range so they provided me with them. They gave me these two foam ear plugs. They helped a little, but not much.

I did great in the shooting aspect, but being exposed to that noise level harmed my hearing a bit. Guns are much louder than the movies. When I was finished, I could not hear very well. One day later, my hearing is still not back all the way. It has improved, but it is not back to normal. I hope it comes all the way back very soon.

I am glad I qualified, but there was a bit of a cost. This will be my last permit. The next time around, I will just be too old to do a carry. As Dirty Harry would say, “A man has got to know his limitations”.
