If you have followed any of my other articles on guns and concealed carry, then you know I am a big fan of people protecting themselves. The gun assaults on us good guys are getting worse all the time. As a 30-year police officer, I can tell you the cops do not get there in time! They get there when it is all over, which means you have to take care of yourself. I am not telling to not call 911. I am saying to be prepared to take care of you and yours until the coppers get there.

That means it is a good idea to have some type of firearm around for self-defense. Here is the problem with that. Most people go out, get a gun, and then throw it in a desk drawer. You cannot do that. You have to take that pistol or revolver and shoot it at least few times. You have to get a feel for it. Likewise, you should try to become proficient with it.

If you are talking about proficiency, then you should consider using a Red Dot Optical or Laser Sight. Either of these sights can help you in hitting the target. I have used them both, each has its strengths. I carry a Laser Sight on all my guns these days. It is especially helpful if you are older and your eyesight is not what it used to be.

Here is the thing, though. If you choose to get an optical sight or laser sight, you must work with it at some shooting range. You cannot slap it on the gun and go on like nothing has happened. These external sights take some getting used to, it takes time to learn how to use them, let alone sight them in accurately initially.

If you decide that you are up to defending yourself, then certainly get a handgun and work with it. Become proficient with it. That may be the difference between staying alive or not.
