I have run the Nextcloud online service off and on for several years. It is a very cool service with a lot of versatility. I have to run Ubuntu server to use Nextcloud. I am not a server person, so I always seem to have difficulties with this set up.
I use the Calendar, Contacts, and Files area on Nextcloud. The information from these three Apps is installed across all my devices. The problem is the Nextcloud calendar stops connecting occasionally. I do not know why, but I suspect it is an issue with how Nextcloud is set up on my Ubuntu server.
Maintaining Nextcloud is a hassle. You have to dedicate a computer to running Ubuntu Server.1 That computer needs to be updated and maintained. Then there are tweaks that need to be done with Nextcloud. When the calendar stopped working again today, I had enough.
I have run a Synology NAS (Network Attached Storage) for several years. It has many applications for different purposes. I do not use most of them, but today I moved my calendar, contacts, and file storage over to the Synology. They have a desktop App that does a backup of my files once a day. The calendar and contacts Apps on Synology are not as robust as Nextcloud, but they are totally reliable!
For now, I am just going to stay with the Synology. It sits under my desk and runs off my local network.

- Yes, you can run Nextcloud online somewhere, but I prefer the privacy of my own set up. ↩
