When the weather warms up, we do some preparation for our raised beds. We grow most of our vegetables in raised beds because the soil here is so bad. If you use raised beds, you have to do some prep work on them every year.

In our case, we got some raised bed mix at a local landscape company and added it to our beds. Then we turned it in with a pitchfork. It is now ready for planting. Some years we add something called YumYum Mix, which is minerals for the soil. Our raised beds are usually covered with some plastic or other material to prevent hail damage. Our raised beds are 4 feet by 8 feet and about 18 inches deep. We put wire mesh on the bottom to keep the moles from killing our crops.

We can plant cool weather crops this time of year and tomatoes in a few weeks. What I like most is the homegrown tomatoes. Store bought tomatoes taste like cardboard in comparison. Bacon Lettuce and Tomato sandwiches, here we come.
